EQUINE FACILITATED ACTIVITIES AND LEARNING
EFAL COMES IN TWO MAIN PARTS:
1. FACILITATED ACTIVITY
There is a wealth of scientific research supporting the theory that working with horses has many benefits including the ability to improve people’s social and emotional functioning. Caring for a horse can have a significant impact on both physical and mental wellbeing. It is now well documented that holding a horse can reduce blood pressure which in turn alleviates tension and anxiety.
We take the user back to the beginning of horsemanship where they will begin by learning about the basic grooming kit. They will then be encouraged to bring their horse from the paddock with the support and guidance of a KARELE team member. Grooming and tacking up their horse is the next exciting step in their learning journey.
There are learning experiences throughout each EFAL session including:
Knowledge of the grooming kit (memory)
Grooming the horse (touch, dexterity)
Leading the horse (Counting steps)
Memorising/recognising lettering around menage (Memory)
Steps over poles (Counting and colour recognition)
Team Work and Communication throughout both with KARELE team members and their horse.
Each stage of learning will be supervised and advise and support will be given throughout. Reflective practise and METAPHORICAL learning (learning where individuals need to be free to interpret or make sense of learning in their own way) are key to the success of EFAL.
All learning takes place from the ground in partnership with one of our much loved horses.
Every session is tailored to meet the needs of each individual user and is guided by one of our highly knowledgeable team members.
BACK TO BASICS
We take the user right back to the basics of horsemanship.
REFLECTIVE PRACTISE & METAPHORICAL LEARNING
Each individual is free to interpret their learning in their own way and are encouraged to reflect upon what they have learned during their session.
Jasim's EFAL Experience
Building Confidence & Independence
Unique Sensory Experiences
Jasim confidently leads Orchid from her field with the support of a KARELE team member close by.
Jasim loves the sensory experience of holding Orchid's mane in his hands. Each EFAL session provides a variety of new and exciting sensory experiences.
Supporting Individual Learning
Jasim is learning new skills throughout his session with Orchid. Learning to tack up and groom Orchid is enabling Jasim to build a strong bond with her too.
